Understand why the wall is needed
Retaining walls may be used to manage grade changes, create defined landscape areas or improve the layout of an outdoor space. The purpose of the wall should be clear before materials and dimensions are selected.
Drainage should be considered early
Water pressure behind a retaining structure can create problems when drainage is not considered. Site conditions, surrounding grade and water movement should be reviewed during project planning.
Connect the wall to the rest of the landscape
A retaining wall usually looks more intentional when its colour, texture and position coordinate with nearby patios, walkways, garden beds and other exterior features.
